(Reuters) – Coronavirus cases more than doubled in 14 states in June, including California, Florida and Texas, according to a Reuters analysis on Tuesday.
Arizona saw the largest increase in cases per month at 294%, followed by South Carolina at 200% and Arkansas at 179%. Cases have also more than doubled in Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon and Utah.
Nationwide, the cases rose by at least 46% and the deaths by 21%. Some states have reported no cases on Tuesday. (To open tmsnrt.rs/3dM9TLE in an external browser for a Reuters Interactive)
While much of the world seems to be over the worst pandemic, the United States and some other countries are still seeing huge daily peaks.
In the six months since the World Health Organization (WHO) first reported a group of mysterious pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China, more than 500,000 people have died from the coronavirus, including over 126,000 Americans.
A strong national response, stringent barriers, and wearing masks in public helped bring the pandemic under control in much of Asia and Europe. Wearing masks has become a political issue in the United States, and many states have started reopening businesses without safely meeting government health standards.
Last week, 21 states reported a rate of people who tested positive for the virus above the WHO-reported 5%. Arizona has the highest rate in the country at 24%. (To open tmsnrt.rs/2WTOZDR in an external browser for a Reuters Interactive)
In only four states – New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Jersey – cases increased by less than 10% in June.
New York, once the epicenter of the U.S. epidemic, saw cases increase by about 6% in June – the country's lowest rate – after taking strict measures to block and social distance to control the disease.
