“Determined” Michel Barnier says trade deal can be done if UK stops “backtracking”

When hopes of a UK-EU trade agreement seem to fade after Brexit, EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier asked London to do so "Clear signals" that it is ready to work towards you.

"Our problem is not with timing, but with substance, especially with the UK repeatedly retracing its commitments in the policy statement." Barnier reported via video link about a think tank referring to the 31-page document setting out the direction of future negotiations in October 2019.

"I think the deal is still possible" he said, adding that he was neither optimistic nor pessimistic, but called himself determined. "It is in the UK's interest to avoid a no deal."
