High profile Twitter accounts, including those of Barack Obama, Elon Musk and Kanye West, have been hacked as part of a widespread cryptocurrency scam.
The accounts, which have large Twitter followers, were hacked at the same time on Wednesday evening and a message was published asking users to send $ 1,000 (£ 794) to a Bitcoin address.
In return, users are promised that their money will be doubled and returned to them.
The message was: “I'm giving something back to my church because of Covid-19! All Bitcoin sent to my address below will be sent back twice.
"If you send $ 1,000, I will send back $ 2,000!
"Do this only for the next 30 minutes! Enjoy."
Target accounts included Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, and Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos.
Kanye West's account was hacked twice with the same message within an hour.
A number of corporate accounts, including those from Apple and Uber, have also been hacked with the published news.
Most tweets were deleted in a matter of minutes, but many were retweeted thousands of times.
Twitter has announced that it has been informed of the security incident.
An online statement said, “We are investigating and taking action to resolve the problem. We will update all of them shortly. "
Users reported that those with verified accounts marked with a blue check mark were unable to send tweets for a short time. Those who tried showed an error message saying, "Something went wrong, but don't be upset – let's try again." .
The hacked news was released after the Twitter accounts of several well-known cryptocurrency companies shared malicious links on Wednesday earlier.
Tyler Winklevoss, who founded the cryptocurrency company Gemini with brother Cameron, tweeted earlier today: “WARNING: @ Gemini's Twitter account has been hacked along with a number of other crypto-Twitter accounts.
“As a result, @Gemini, @Coinbase, @Binance and @Coindesk tweeted about a fraud partnership with CryptoForHealth. DO NOT CLICK THE LINK! These tweets are scams. "
His brother Cameron added: “All major CRYPTO TWITTER accounts have been compromised.
“2FA / strong password was used for the @ Gemini account. We are investigating and hope to receive more information shortly. "
